How to work with PAPIER MACHE (paper mache)

Ever wondered how they make face-masks/handmade sheets/textured paper ornaments? The secret for many objects consisting of wood pulps are this reusable ecological Mache, despite the French name peppier Mache it was originated in china. I like working on this medium and it is easily available at home and on store, the best part – you get to create your image be it a storage item, showpiece, furniture, all kind of crafty objects, collages, gift boxes, toys…. etc. one way to make them are.

Things you need for making paper Mache

  • paper
  • flour
  • glue
  1. soak paper in water until it turns pulpy
  2. add equal parts of glue and flour
  3. mix all 3 items (grind it to make a smooth texture: optional)

Finally adjust the consistency as desired and start working on it. Once your done molding your object let it dry in day light for faster results. It may take hours up to few days to harden depending on the thickness.

Worried about it getting soaked in water??There are many paint mediums available in the market for coating that protects paper from getting damaged. Do your research for best results, few that comes to my mind now are:

  • Lacquer
  • Varnish
  • Acrylic
  • Wax based Oils
